The stories and events of Bass Strait, the infamous stretch of water between mainland Australia and the island state of Tasmania, are told in the Bass Strait Maritime Centre, Devonport.
- Learn about the Strait’s natural history, European exploration, shipwrecks, settlement and trade.
- Take the Helm and captain a 1910’s steamer into the Mersey River or through the heads of Port Phillip Bay. Test your skills on this simulated experience and face some of the challenges of Bass Strait sailing…without getting wet!
- Try the real thing on board the newly restored Julie Burgess ketch, the last of the Burgess families’ old Bass Strait fishing vessels. Two-hour sailings are scheduled from October** through to the end of June on Wednesdays and Sundays subject to weather conditions. Please note minimum numbers apply and passengers should contact the Bass Strait Maritime Centre for bookings and departure times. The sailings take you out into Bass Strait and back, be warned though, on this experience you might get a bit wet!
